aa See Your Doctor Cancer Survvors: Ask Your Health Care Provder For A ‘Survvorshp Care Plan’ (NAPSA)—More than 14 mllon Amercans lvng today have had cancer. Often called “survvors,” ndvduals wth a hstory of cancer often experence great relef and possess a new lease on lfe, havng successfully faced a serous dsease. Survvors may also encounter anxety, fearng reoccurrence or complcatons from treatment. Durng actve treat- ment, people wth cancer are often actvely engaged n ther cancer care and enjoy a sense of support and securty from the regular nteractons they have wth ther oncology team. When treatment ends, however, the bggest queston for cancer survvors s often “What should I do now?” The Amercan Socety of Clncal Oncology (ASCO), the world’s leadng professonal organzaton representng physcans who care for people wth cancer, beleves t s crtcally mportant for cancer survvors to receve proper followup care and ongong health care support. ASCO has developed the “Survvorshp Care Plan,” a new tool for survvors and health care professonals to dscuss and record the detals of the cancer dagnoss, the treatments receved, possble late complcatons or sde effects of treatments, the need for future checkups and cancer tests, and suggestons for mantanng and mprovng sur- vvors’ health. Doctors are lookng nto ways to gve specal care to people who have survved cancer. “At the end of ther treatment, patents wth cancer should expect to receve a survvorshp care plan, but f they don’t get one, they should ask for one from ther doctor or nurse,” sad Deborah K.
