Museum Park Celebrates Freedom Thursday, March 1, 2001 AMAZING SIGHTS xX Museum Park Celebrates Freedom (NAPS)—Aninteractive museum that celebrates the freedom of the press has added another symbolof freedom. The Newseum, located in Arlington, Virginia, has joined in a cooperative effort to present Freedom Park. A park in Virginia holds the largest display of original pieces of the Berlin Wall outside of Germany. Freedom Park, whichis adjacent to the Newseum and just across the river from Washington, D.C., contains symbols of freedom from around the world. One area holds eight pieces of the Berlin Wall and anorigi- nal guard tower that stood near “Checkpoint Charlie,” the best known crossing point between East and West Berlin. This is the largest display of original pieces of the wall outside of Germany. The Journalists Memorial, a spiral of glass and steel, honors more than 1,500 journalists who died trying to report the news. A third section contains a number of icons of freedom, such as a toppled statue of Lenin from the Soviet Union and a bronze casting of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s jail cell door.
