(NAPSA)—From volunteering at local soup kitchens to pitching the perfect game or getting straight As on a report card, kids accomplish remarkable things every day—and their stories may inspire others to do so as well. That’s why Sunny D Intense Sport, a new sport drink for kids, created the “It Pays to be a Good Sport Essay Contest.” The contest recognizes children ages 7 to 17 for their good sportsmanship on andoff the field. Contest winners are acknowledged for their accomplishments on the playing field, in the classroom, at home or in the community. Winners are chosen from each state based on the originality, relevance and quality of the essay, taking age into consideration. Bethany Hamilton, an amateur surfing champion, was selected as spokesperson for the contest because of her positive attitude and can-do spirit. Hamilton lost her left arm during a shark attack while surfing. Soon after, however, she was back on her board, showing amazingresilience and courage. “I wanted to be a part of the Sunny D Intense Sport ‘It Pays to Be a Good Sport Essay Contest’ because there are tons of kids just like me doing extraordinary things every day,” said Hamilton. “You often hear about the negative things kids do, but I think it’s more important to point out all of the positive things they are doing.” From the many essays submit- A contest honors youngsters for someremarkable contributions. ted in 2004, Welland Burnside was selected as the grand prize winner. He received $5,000 as well as an appearance in Sports Illustrated for Kids. He is 16 years old and lives in South Carolina. Burnside is a huge sports fan who cycles, swims, plays basketball and soccer. In addition to personally playing sports, his greatest joy is motivating people of all ages and backgroundsto get involved in athletics. To accomplish this, he organized field days for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, collected and shipped sports equipment to U.S. military personnel in Iraq, established a free bowling league for foster children and donated indoor games to hospitalized children.
