U.S. Tutors Impact Lives Of Students In Japan--Without Leaving Home Thursday, March 1, 2001 Of Students In Japan— Without Leaving Home (NAPSA)—Anonline English learning program that connects cultures and people through actual conversation is getting high grades. The program, called BE-GO Talk, was created by language and tech- nology experts at Silicon Valley- based Minds and Technologies. BE-GO Talk invites Japanese students to select a U.S. tutor with whom they develop an ongoing dialogue. While students increase their knowledge of English and U.S. culture, tutors gain the opportunity to make an impact on children’s lives while working at homeat their convenience. The program workslike this. The student records a voice mes- sage and sendsit via the Internet to the tutor. The tutor listens to the message, then records and sends a response within two to three days. Students and tutors work together at their own pace as they share life experiences through conversational English. To ensure the highest of standards, all con- versations are screened by Minds and Technologies for effectiveness and appropriateness. The BE-GO Talk program is cur- rently looking for U.S. tutors. In exchange for dedicating 15 hours a week, tutors are compensated approximately $12.50 an hour. To qualify, prospective tutors must be native English speakers who have a minimum of one year’s experience with children around the ages of 10 to 13; the ability to speak slowly andclearly; and, a Windowsbased PC, a 28.8 kbps modem, Internet Explorer” browser software and a headset.
