Each year the competition in The Sriu_ Timbersports Series, a 16-year-old test of skill for lumberjacks, has gotten stiffer and the times have gotten faster. That, however, won't stop reigning champion, New Zealander Jason Wynyard, from striving for an unprecedented fifth straight STIHL Timbersports?title. To start, there are regional competitions lumberjacks must compete in order to acquire the necessary points. The top 28 athletes compete for 10 semi-finalist positions at Trenton, Maine. They spend four days on six events: * The Springboard * The STIHL? Stock Saw * The Underhand Chop * The Single Buck * The Standing Block Chop * The Hot Saw Next, the STIHL Timbersports Series moves to Branson, Mo. and the Silver Dollar City amusement park where these 10 compete for points toward the Championship in Alaska. Finally, in August 2001 at the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show at Ketchikan, Ala., 12 athletes compete for the title of Timbersports Champion and a new Dodge Truck. An additional exhibition event has been slated for September in Munich, Germany. This invitationonly event features select USA and German competitors.
