Rescue Heroes Offer Lessons In Fire Safety Thursday, March 1, 2001 Rescue Heroes Offer LessonsIn Fire Safety (NAPSA)—“Fire is powerful, but so are you!” That’s the message being delivered by Billy Blazes, one of Fisher-Price’s Rescue Heroes firefighter action figures. This positive role model for children is teaching kids how they can positively affect their own and other people’s lives. Rescue Heroes has teamed up with the Fire Department of the city of New York (FDNY), the largest fire department in the U.S., to provide fire safety tips that can be downloaded at www.rescueheroes.com. The site also uses a game to teach children some important fire prevention measures. It also provides materials and information to help children draw an escape plan in which they are encouraged to map out the safest escape route duringa fire. Here are a few fire safety tips from Billy Blazes: * Create an escape plan in case of a fire by drawing a diagram of every level of your home, showing all the windowsand doors to every room. * Plan two ways out of every room. Consider all windows and doors as possible exits. * Have the family agree on a meeting place outside of the home, in front of the home. * If you live in an apartment building use the stairs—never the elevator—in caseoffire. * Practice your escape. Practice it in the dark,if possible. * Put up smoke detectors on each level of your home. This firefighter action figure serves as a positive role model for kids and may be used to teach fire safety awareness. * Replace smoke alarm batteries twice a year and test the alarms every month. When the alarm chirps, the battery is low and may not workeffectively. * If you smell smoke, call 911. * If you see smoke, do not hide, get outside, stay low as you go. * Feel the door first before opening it to see if it’s hot. If it is, find anotherexit. * Never play with matches, lighters or candles. Fisher-Price has also created a special FDNY Rescue Hero with Toys R’ Usto help contribute funding for additional fire safety education programs.
