4-H Ignites The Wind Of Change

The Wind Of Change (NAPS)—Millions of young people across the country are participating in innovative programs that address one of the mostcritical issues of our time—energy. The Power of the Wind, a 4-H program funded by the 3M Foundation, teaches middle-school aged children how to use engineering principles to design and build wind-energy projects. In several states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri, participants are applying the skills learned by testing and designing turbines to powerlightbulbs. “The wind energy industry is working hard to keep pace with the world’s demand for alternative energy,” said Barry King, 4-H alum andelectrical engineer. “These programs ignite passion in today’s youth, encouraging our next generation of scientists and engineers.” Groundbreaking projects like these also help address America’s largest challenge, keeping our workforce competitive globally. 4-H is leading the way by working to prepare 1 million new young people to excel in science, engineering and technology by 2013.
