Fortunately, there are steps homeowners can take to prevent foreclosure. The first step is for borrowers to contact their lender or a certified credit counselor. Despite available resources for working through tough times, many people avoid contacting their lender because they are afraid or believe it will do no good. “The earlier a lender is contacted, the greater opportunity to address each homeowner’s circumstances,” said Comptroller of the Currency John C. Dugan. “Experience shows the sooner a delinquent borrower is engaged, the more likely the chances of avoiding foreclosure.” Federal regulators, including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, encourage lenders to work with borrowers, especially when it comes to keeping their homes.
